French drip is a manual coffee brewing method that uses a special carafe. The carafe has a filter and a lid that are placed on top.
The brewing technique is similar to other manual drip coffee brewing methods. Coffee is coarsely ground and placed in the filter. The filter is placed on top of the carafe, and it is designed to fit snugly. Then hot water is poured over the coffee grounds. The filter retains the grounds, while brewed coffee passes through in the pot.
At the end the filter is covered with a lid that prevents coffee from getting cold.
The French Drip coffee pot was brought to the states several hundred years ago by French Colonists. Today it is an extremely popular method of brewing in Louisiana, in which they also brew tea and chicory coffee as well as regular coffee.
French drip filter coffee makers have an advantage over other pour over coffee makers in that the pot comes with a lid that retains heat and allows the user to brew multiple cups of coffee that will stay warm for a long time. This is in contrast to the Chemex Coffee Maker or the Hario V60, in which coffee goes cold quickly unless a separate stopper is purchased.
